Nothing in the history of the Al Karak Elam as recounted in Dragon #51 is incompatible with them being an elven subrace. They didn't combine two separate races, erasing the earlier one. Avariel were stated to be also called Al Karak Elam from their very first appearance.ДЄ good comparison is how kobolds became (arguably) more explicitly reptilian between 2e and 3e. Their appearance was revised slightly to make them more elflike and less humanlike, but it's not the case that two different races were retconned into being the same thing all along. The avariel first appeared by that name in The Complete Book of Elves and they were always intended to be the same thing as the Al Karak Elam. Kenku Hawk-like humanoids from 'Asian' lands (although they were in Monster Manual II).Dragonfly wings, elf ears, stand about 4'-5' tall. Sylph A fairy-like creature from the Elemental Plane of Air.Succubus Winged female Demons/Tanar'ri who excel at getting mortals to lust after them.Basic winged humans, I think but not sure. Raptoran From 3e, if I'm not mistaken (Races of the Wild, I want to say).They have angel-like wings instead of bat-wings. Aarakocra Bird-like humanoids that have been in D&D since 1e at least.But do a little poking around wiki on subjects such as types of gas giants, stars, and water worlds and you'll find a host of ideas to draw inspiration from. Water bodies are sorta my weak spot, more due to how water slows down movement than anything else.

Partially, but with a little creativity those worlds can work.
